Wed. 4/24

• SAC Honors Screening

1. 7pm, Michigan Theater, FREE!
2. Lagos, Nigeria. An American journalist, a Nigerian Filmmaker, and a colonial ghost. Narration interrupts insidious representations as ethnography is forcefully evicted from the house of rationality. Documentary footage of Lagos mixes with pirated “Nollywood” cut-outs in a series of fictions reconstructing notions of Africa and highlights an ongoing Western fascination with the continent.

2. Bolivia La Paz’s Zona Sur neighborhood is Bolivia’s most exclusive enclave and has housed the country’s affluent elite for generations. Here, in an adobe-tile-roofed castle, a statuesque matriarch reigns over her spoiled offspring and indigenous servants. Social change, however unwelcome, is on its way. As the mother squabbles with her self-indulgent, oversexed teenage son and clashes with her petulant daughter, her 6-year-old boy wanders the rooftops unsupervised. The scent of impending decline permeates the air, and the threat of aristocratic privileges quickly changing hands heralds a new era in a seemingly interminable class war. Bolivia’s official entry for the Academy® Awards foreign-language film race, this searing portrait of a patrician family in flux eloquently chronicles their final days during a time of intense social change and cogently exposes the bubble of decadence in which they exist.

• Fold Crumble Crush: The Art of El Anatsui

2. Behind the charming, easy-going artist we discover a man who remains mysterious even to his dearest friends. The film circles around Anatsui, drawing ever closer to a deep understanding of the man and his surprising bottle top hangings. We see the celebrated artist installing work on the great world stage of the Venice Biennale; we follow him back to the small town of Nsukka as he goes about his daily life, then watch him inside the hive of his studio directing assistants as they stitch together bottle tops into a vast metal hanging. Finally, Anatsui admits us to the privacy of his home where he tells us about his formative years, and reveals a youthful discovery that clouded his life.

Coming to Ann Arbor directly from Dance Films Association’s 41st Dance On Camera Festival in New York City, this screening celebrates the immediacy, energy, and mystery of dance combined with the intimacy of film. DFA’s Festival is the oldest dance film festival in the world that sparked a global explosion of activity.

• CCS Chinese Documentary Film Series: Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

2. AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY is the inside story of a dissident for the digital age who inspires global audiences and blurs the boundaries of art and politics. First-time director Alison Klayman gained unprecedented access to Ai while working as a journalist in China. Her detailed portrait provides a nuanced exploration of contemporary China and one of its most compelling public figures.

Personal stories of harrowing events, medical mazes, discrimination and the effects of social stigma blend together to create a compelling look at a generation coming out of the “bipolar closet”. OF TWO MINDS puts an authentic human face on bipolar disorder, providing an intimate, sometimes painful, sometimes painfully funny look at those who live in its shadows…our parents and children, our friends and lovers…and ourselves.

2. Miguel is a handsome, young and beloved fisherman in Cabo Blanco, a small fishing village in the Northern coast of Perú, where the community has deep-rooted religious traditions. Miguel is married to the beautiful Mariela, who is 7-months pregnant with their firstborn, but Miguel harbors a scandalous secret: He is having a love affair with another man, Santiago, a painter who is ostracized by the townsfolk for being agnostic and open about his sexuality. When Santiago drowns accidentally in the ocean’s strong undertow, he cannot pass peacefully to the other side. He returns after his death to ask Miguel to look for his body and bury it according to the rituals of the town. Miguel must choose between sentencing Santiago to eternal torment or doing right by him and, in turn, revealing their relationship to Mariela and the entire village.

• CSS Chinese Documentary Film Series: The Revolutionary

Over a five-year period, award-winning former-CBS journalist and China specialist, Irv Drasnin, interviewed Rittenberg to produce a compelling, complex and unique understanding of the 20th century’s biggest revolution. From Sid first meeting Mao in the caves of Yan’an, to his becoming famous and powerful during the Cultural Revolution, to his battling insanity in solitary, his journey and his profound insight illuminate a much greater history–a history few Chinese are aware of, let alone many Americans, told by an American who was there.

• Screening: I Travel Because I Have To, I Come Back Because I Love You

2. In this hauntingly melancholy film, geologist José Renato, travels to Sertão, an isolated region in Northeastern Brazil. His goal is to assess possible routes for a water canal from the region’s only river. For many of the region’s inhabitants, the canal will be a lifeline, the chance of a future and source of hope. But for those living on the canal’s direct course, it means only requisitions, departure and loss.

• A Space for Music, A Seat for Everyone: 100 Years of UMS Performances in Hill Auditorium

As part of a daylong event, UMS premieres its new original documentary celebrating this iconic building. • Screening: Black and Blue: The story of Gerold Ford, Willis Ward, and the 1934 Michigan-Georgia Tech Football Game

2. About the Film “Black and Blue” When Georgia Tech came to Michigan in 1934, the Wolverines were forced to bench their best play, Willis Ward, because he was an African-American. The incident infuriated Ward’s best friend on the team, a future president by the name of Jerry Ford, who threatened to quit the team in response. The friendship that began in the Big House lasted all the way to the White House. This is the story of two schools, two friends, and a game that changed everything.

Contemporary digital media production centers on the Asia-Pacific region–Silicon Valley and China, sites where software and hardware are made.  Asians and Asia have become racialized as digital; the “nimble fingers” of Asian women are a key resource in digital industries.  However, this gendering and racialization of computer manufacture as women of colors’ work has a forgotten earlier history.

•  Examining Heroes and Icons: Cultures of Resistance Screening

2. Does each gesture really make a difference? Can music and dance be weapons of peace?  In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and, as she saw it, heading for self-destruction. After several years, traveling over five continents, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. This is their story.
