Mark Cendrowski, Director of The Big Bang Theory, Television Directing Workshop

  1. Friday October 29; 4:00 to 6:00PM; Argus II Studio, 400 Fourth Street, Ann Arbor. (Directions: take William Street all the way west of town until it dead ends at the ARGUS II Building.)
  2. Mark Cendrowski, UM Alum and Director of such noted television situation comedies as “The Big Bang Theory” and “Two and A Half Men”  will conduct a workshop on television directing at the ARGUS II studio, Friday, October 29, from 4-6PM.   Working with student actors from the Department of Theater and Drama, and scenes from the hit series “The Big Bang Theory,” Mr. Cendrowski’s workshop will focus on blocking actors and coaching performance for multi-camera television production.  He will also answer questions about his career and working in Hollywood as a television series director. All are invited to attend.

Lioness

  2. Government policy prohibits women from fighting in ground combat, so they aren’t trained for it — but that doesn’t mean that they don’t get caught in skirmishes. This compelling documentary about women soldiers in Iraq gives an inside look at the first women in U.S. history to engage in ground combat.

Friends of Dorothy: Oz’s Legacy to the LGBT Community

  1. 7pm, E. Quad, Rm. 126, Free!
  2. Judy Garland’s portrayal of Dorothy Gale helped make her a gay icon and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” became the gay anthem — a yearning for a home far away from the small-town provincialism of a black-and-white existence. Audience members will join panelists in discussing the historical and ongoing legacy of the Oz books and movies for the shaping of the LGBT psyche.

A Think Fast History of Horror Film

  3. The king (or queen) of midnight movies is back for it’s annual midnight run at the State Theater. Adv. tix go on sale Monday during business hours. Make sure not to miss this event!

  2. Professors Markus Nornes and Erik Santos introduce the connections between the films Dance of Darkness (Directed by Edin Velez, 1989, 55 min.) and Sacrifice (Donald Richie and Marty Gross), the butoh tradition, and the context in which these films and dance forms were created.

  2. You are cordially invited to join us on Thursday, October 21st at 8:00 PM in the North Quad Dining Hall for the biggest Cinephiles Anonymous meeting to date. The main feature of the night is the 1997 psycho-theoretical Japanese art-house thriller, Cure, by Kurosawa Kyoshi — a nice prelude to the upcoming Halloween season. Prior to this, we will be screening a short piece by Sean Patrick himself (the man in Texas behind all the amazing posters) as well as a rare screening of Space Water Onion, Paul Yates’ thesis film from SUNY Purchase, featuring his friend Richard Hall before he became international techno rock-star known as Moby. This night is one not to be missed.

  2. A general and a plucky princess, accompanied by two bumbling peasants, smuggle treasure out of hostile territory in this film. George Lucas based his initial outline of Star Wars on Kurosawa’s film.

This notorious horror parody – a fast-paced potpourri of camp, sci-fi and rock ‘n’ roll, among other things – tracks the exploits of naïve couple Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) after they stumble upon the lair of transvestite vampire Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). The film – a bizarre musical co-starring Meat Loaf andRichard O’Brien – bombed in its initial release but later gained a cult following at midnight showings.

  2. The Radiant Sun, directed by Michigan filmmaker Terri Sarris and co-produced by Sarris and University of Maryland Associate Professor of Architecture Ronit Eisenbach, chronicles the life and work of designer Ruth Adler Schnee and the challenges she faced as a female architectural designer in the second half of the twentieth century. Now in her 80s and living in Michigan, where she designs woven textiles for Anzea, Schnee, and her husband, Edward Schnee, were important figures in bringing the mid-century modernist movement to Michigan. A discussion with Ruth Adler Schnee and the film’s producers will follow the screening. A selection of Ms. Schnee’s textiles will be on view in UMMA’s display cases adjacent to the Helmut Stern Auditorium.

Terriers Free Screening w/ Meet & Greet

Cast members  Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James from the the new FX
series, Terriers, will visit campus to host a screening of the show followed
by a meet and greet with the students.

Students will have a chance to screen an episode, then interact with Donal
and Michael to ask questions, learn about upcoming episodes and get an
insiders perspective on the production of Terriers.

The first 100 people will receive a Terriers t-shirt.

Here is a little background on the show:

Terriers, the newest FX original series, airing on Wednesdays at 10pm,  is a
comedic drama centered on Hank Dolworth (Donal Logue), an ex-cop who
partners with his best friend Britt Pollack (Michael Raymond-James) to
launch an unlicensed private investigation business. The duo, both
struggling with maturity issues, solve crimes while avoiding danger and
responsibility.
